OpenBSD Resurrects
My 2013 MacPro

Today I decided to upgrade my 2013 MacPro (Lovingly referred to as "Little Totem") with macOS ventura, since softwareupdate was letting me know that a new version of macOS was available to install.

I started with backing up files, as one normally should do before doing a system upgrade. I normally copy the installer to a USB stick, because I always do a clean installation when there's a new OS upgrade, that's just how I roll.

I start the installation process and everything is going great, I'm excited to see the new features... time to reboot.

Darkness...just darkness... is this it? has my beloved little Totem seen the last of its days! Genuinely I'm a bit concerned lol. I try some digital CPR techniques/debugging, and nothing. Right now I'm thinking...Thanks apple, surely softwareupdate checks for compatible hardware before showing an upgrade button!? It's my own dumb fault for not checking the supported hardware first :(

Since my data is all gone, I might as well take advantage of this opportunity and install OpenBSD, I've been wanting to self-host some projects and reduce my AWS bill(more on that later).

Installing OpenBSD is pretty straightforward and usually painless, and that tradition continues as I was able to install on this almost 10-year-old machine.

I didn't install any of the X system as my goals are for this to be server. I'm pretty stoked that this machine is still working flawlessly.

Long live little Totem.
